Among the great disciples of Gautama Buddha, Arahant Sivali is widely revered as the foremost monk blessed with prosperity and good fortune. In Buddhist tradition, he is honored as a symbol of abundance, merit, patience, and unwavering devotion to the Dhamma. Even today, many Buddhists respectfully remember Arahant Sivali before beginning journeys, business activities, or acts of generosity, believing that his blessings bring protection and success.

Early Life

According to Buddhist history, Sivali Thero was born into a royal family. Before his birth, his mother endured a long and painful pregnancy that lasted for several years. This hardship was believed to be the result of karma from a past life. Despite the suffering, she remained patient and faithful.

When the child was finally born, extraordinary signs of merit appeared. The Buddha later recognized Sivali as a being of immense spiritual potential. From a young age, he showed wisdom, calmness, and a deep interest in the teachings of the Buddha.

Ordination and Enlightenment

As he grew older, Sivali entered the Buddhist monastic order and became a disciple of the Buddha. Through dedication, meditation, and disciplined practice, he quickly progressed in spiritual development. Eventually, he attained Arahanthood — the highest stage of enlightenment in Buddhism — becoming free from greed, hatred, and delusion.

The Buddha declared Arahant Sivali as the monk “foremost among those who receive requisites.” Wherever he traveled, devotees eagerly offered food, robes, medicine, and shelter. It is said that even in remote forests and difficult places, the necessities required by the monks appeared through the faith and generosity of the people.

Symbol of Prosperity and Blessings

Arahant Sivali is often regarded as a guardian of travelers and a symbol of good fortune. Many Buddhist homes and temples keep statues or images of Sivali Thero to remind devotees of the power of merit and generosity.

However, Buddhism teaches that true prosperity does not arise merely from worship, but from wholesome actions, kindness, generosity, and moral living. Arahant Sivali’s life demonstrates that blessings come through patience, virtue, and accumulated merit.
